Mobile Network Operators are continuously introducing new products and services to meet the ever growing demand for mobility in today’s fast moving world, while simultaneously attempting to make such services increasingly relevant to, and affordable by the poorest members of society. One innovative application of mobile technology that has attracted considerable attention in recent months is the provision of financial (or M-banking) services.

Glo M-Banking

Background

InterSwitch commenced integration discussions with Glo-mobile prior to the sale of the first Glo SIM pack. The design and implementation of the Glo M-Banking service commenced in July 2003, and completed in July 2004. Glo M-Banking product was launched in March 22nd 2005, after series of tests and pilot.

Challenge

The fundamental challenge faced was creating suitable awareness and knowledge of the product for the banks as customer sign-up was dependent on the banks. Various bank branch staff (especially customer care) had a hard time coming to a reasonable awareness of the Glo m-Banking product.

The Solution

The Glo M-banking is Nigeria’s premier mobile banking solution that allows for 24/7 access to your bank only through your Glo line. For the first time in Nigeria, one application will provide a uniform interface to a multitude of banks. M-Banking offers the user a mobile channel to conduct banking enquiries and transactions.

How it works

Any Glo subscriber can Check Balance on his account (on any of the 23 banks on the InterSwitch network). Other functionalities of the Glo M-banking solution include:


	Statement – This function provideinformation on the last 5 transactions the user conducted on his account.

	Recharge – All prepaid customers with bank accounts in participating banks may carry out virtual recharge

	Transfer – This function enables the user to move funds from one account to another (intrabank and interbank transfers).

	Change PIN – User can change the PIN associated with his InterSwitch debit card.

	Payment – User can pay his Utility Bills, pay a merchant for goods and services, etc.

	Register– User can change directly register for M-Banking service via his phone.
