The Nigeria Debit cards (otherwise known as ATM Cards or InterSwitch Cards) are payment cards that can be used to withdraw cash from automated teller machines (ATMs), make purchases at restaurants, supermarket, shops or hotels through the point of sale terminals, make purchases on websites connected to InterSwitch payment engine (WebPAY) and also effect transfers through the secured mobile banking platform on the InterSwitch network.

The Nigeria Debit Card is a plastic(Magnetic stripe or chip) card that acts as an alternative payment method to cash when making purchases. The Nigeria Debit Card is directly linked to the cardholder’s bank account (savings or current) that is domiciled in a member bank on the InterSwitch network such that funds are deducted directly from the cardholder's bank account(savings or current)  whenever the card is used. The amount a customer spends is limited to the amount in his or her bank account. It avails the Nigeria Debit Card cardholder access to their bank account 24/7. All transactions performed on the card are processed online realtime and as such deductions when purchases are made is reflected immediately on the balance.

With a Nigeria Debit Card, a customer does not need to load money on his or her card. When you accept the Nigeria Debit Card, your customer is likely to spend more because the Nigeria Debit Card gives him/her access to money in their bank account anytime of the day.

The Nigeria Debit card is currently issued by 22 banks (post consolidation) out of the 24 banks in Nigeria today. The 22 banks have also branded the cards in their specific look and feel.

Although the faces (look & feel) of the Nigeria Debit Card may differ from bank to bank, the unifying factor is the fact that all the cards have the InterSwitch logo behind it,and can be used on the InterSwitch network and on ALL terminals(customer tounch points) irrespective of the bank that deployed (owns) the terminal.
