INTERSWITCH LAUNCHES AIRTIME RECHARGE AT THE ATMS |
A new Service from
InterSwitch that allows mobile phones subscribers
to recharge their phone in real time at Automated
Teller Machines (ATMs) has been launched today.
InterSwitch’s vision is that any customer
of any Financial Institution will be able to
recharge their phone from any of the ATMs on
the network nationwide, 24 hours a day. The
service can be used by customers of Vmobile,
MTN, and Glo networks. The service will also
be available to other prepaid service providers
like MTS First Wireless, Multilinks, Intercellular
etc.
InterSwitch has joined forces with Vmobile,
MTN and Glo to enable airtime recharge at all
ATM machines that displays the InterSwitch logo.
The service is only available to GSM subscribers
for now while the other PTOs will offer the
facility to its customers very soon.
The launch of this Service marks the beginning
of our roll out plan cross the whole of the
country. The airtime recharge at the ATM are
now available to the over 1.2 million Nigeria
Debit Cardholders. The service will be delivered
to the other phone network subscribers very
shortly. All the 800 ATMs deployed on the InterSwitch
network now offer the service, with more expected
in the next few months. We expect over 2000
ATMs by December 2006.
Mr. Mitchell Elegbe, Managing Director of InterSwitch
commented: “this value added service is
just another indication of our commitment to
the development of Nigeria through technology
innovation as we have clearly demonstrated in
the past. |

The launch of airtime recharge at the ATM is
great news for customers of MTN, Mtel, Vmobile
and Glo. The phone is used by the same group
of people that most frequently use the ATMs,
so we see a close correlation between the two
markets." This is an illustration of our
mission to deliver a complete service solution
to our customers’.
In a statement, InterSwitch’s Marketing
& Corporate Communications spokes person,
Ms Taiwo Seriki said the ATM users will now
be able do more than just withdraw money, check
their bank account balances, view the last five
transactions on the account, transfer funds
from one account to the other in the same bank
but also recharge their mobile phones while
at the ATM.They will no longer be afraid of
scratching away the PIN number of their phone
cards.
Within the last 2years, the number of ATM transactions
through the InterSwitch network grew from 1,065,972
in 2004 to 14,448,615 between January 2005 to
March 2006, a rise of 92.6% on the previous
years.
Elegbe further said: “We are providing ever greater access to cash and these record figures demonstrate the value and reliability of the InterSwitch network to Nigeria consumers. The usage of the ATM machines has grown significantly in the past few years and this has been accomplished with our network being available 100 per cent of the time with no switch downtime whatsoever in 2005.” |
